Which are your favorite community suggestions?

I know, I know, it's been TOO LONG since I last posted (how does she expect to GAIN A READERSHIP when she won't even KEEP UP WITH HER BLOG ENTRIES??  BLOGGING 101, PEOPLE!  Sorry? I've been meaning to?  I'll work on it?  It was Easter?  The dog ate it?  Sorry again, we don't have a dog?)

Alright, stop getting me off track, back to the topic at hand: Mike MacNaughton of dfpe.org (Dallas Friends of Public Education) has a fascinating post on his blog. A space is provided for citizens to comment on what they would trim in DISD were they in charge and presented with the budget cuts we are sure to be swallowing soon.  He put the comments into a pages long chart for anyone who clicks to see (Citizen Feedback pdf through April 20).

I am heartened overall with not only the number of people who responded, but with most of what they had to say.  From parents to teachers to students, I was reminded how many we have in this fight and how much we can accomplish when we come together.  I hope the school district trustees are listening and weighing in on these voices.  Though we can't directly dictate how much money the state will come through with (but please people, remember at least until voting in the next election!!), we can participate in the process.  Then, regardless of what happens, at least we won't feel like loser slugs for sitting by quietly waiting for it to happen to us.

So.  Here are a few of the suggestions I thought most interesting.  (CAVEAT: I am paraphrasing for sure, and some of these suggestions came from more than one person; to see the exact document scroll up and click link above.) 

In no particular order:
1.)  Get rid of required off-campus staff days.  Instead offer online courses for professional development that would be a requirement for the teacher to finish sometime during the year but on their own timetable.
2.) Get rid of bilingual, or get rid of it sooner: teach to the ESL students' potential; streamline into regular classes earlier.
3.)  Eliminate the Alternative Certification Program.  (Umm...if we're firing teachers, why are we paying to train new people to get certified?)
4.) Several suggestions for Magnets: instead of cutting a disproportionate amount of magnet teachers, require a magnet school yearly fee per student of a few hundred dollars; students not going to their home school (in other words, magnet kids) must provide their own transportation.
5.)  Students who must take summer school pay for the cost of it.  
6.)  Make parking at sporting events for pay.
7.)  Superintendents and non-campus administration: apply a 5-10% salary reduction across the board before any teaching positions are considered.
8.)  Get rid of all the super "extras"--drivers, cell phones, gas, etc.
9.)  Eliminate assistant principals except from schools with over a to be determined number of students.
10.) "Do we really need 15 football coaches for one high school?" (could this be true, you think, or is it hyperbole??)
11.) Each campus is in charge of own school mowing/landscape.
12.)  Greatly reduce busing (a certain number of students per bus would be needed in order for it to be deemed necessary).
13.) Align DISD graduation requirements with that of the state.  (This apparently makes a P.E. class and a couple other classes unnecessary.)
14.)  Eliminate 12th grade.  Some suggested this--dropping senior year-- along with keeping Pre-K.
15.)  No off-site specialists.
16.) Go green.  This includes the disposable lunch plates/trays.
17.)  Many people noted how many trays FULL of food were thrown away at the end of every lunch.  Have kids "order" in the morning so that the waste wouldn't be so enormous.  Others suggested they go back to the better tasting obviously bad for you food options so kids might actually eat it!)
18.)  Cut on "Fat Cats"--any salary over 300+ is reduced by a certain percent.
19.)  Salaries over 100K re-evaluated.
20.)  Create a salary "cap" for supers/administrators.
21.)  Lots of suggestions to lengthen the school day but make it Monday-Thursday.
22.)  Separate furlough days for administrative staff (maybe they have just a M-Th week?)
23.)  Change the retirement benefits.
24.)  Each administrator and superintendent is required to sub at least one day of school per year.  (I love this one.)
25.)  Staff new schools with displaced teachers.
26.) This one I found especially interesting: a teacher suggested that some sort of campus incentive should be created for NOT spending all of the money in the campus budget.  Apparently each year around March and April, there's a mad dash to spend all the money (use it or lose it) so it is not spent wisely.  The teacher suggested that as long as academic levels indicated positive growth, the campuses should be allowed to preserve some funds by carrying over a percentage, perhaps to a capped level.
27.)  One TAG parent lamented how hard his daughter had worked over the last three years, wanting to finish with top honors at the #1 school in America.   "One would think that the leaders of one of the worst school systems in America would have moved heaven and earth to preserve the FEW schools in which we could take pride." There is much dissension as to whether the magnet schools should take such a hard hit, or, as this parent suggests, should be kept in place as models for all of the district to aspire to.

OPEN LETTER TO RICK PERRY FROM REP. RON REYNOLDS

HOW'S THIS FOR AWESOME?  I've highlighted my favorite section, because I do stuff like that.)

Governor Perry,

I hope that this message finds you in good spirits.  In light of the Legislative Budget Board (LBB) report regarding the state budget, I felt that it was important for me to write you regarding mine and concerns of my constituents.
As you are aware, the LBB predicts that the state budget approved by the House Appropriations Committee would result in 272,000 fewer jobs in Texas in 2012 and 335,000 fewer in 2013.  The LBB also predicts that the budget would eliminate 117,000 private sector jobs in 2012 and 146,000 in 2013.  In 2006, you pushed through a tax swap that you said would better fund public education.  Not only has your promise not proven true, but it has actually drained money from schools, leaving the state with a permanent shortfall that has reached $5 billion a year.  Texas currently ranks near the bottom in funding for public education.
Although you and the politicians in control are responsible for this record shortfall, you have chosen to focus your sights on local school districts, proposing billions of dollars in cuts to public education to offset the shortfall in the upcoming biennium.  As you are well aware, this will result in hundreds of thousands of lost jobs across the state and poorer quality education for children of all ages.  Furthermore, extreme cuts to education pose a great threat to the future prosperity of our state.  We need to make Texas school children a priority, and it is economically shortsighted to increase class sizes, fire teachers and underfund classrooms.  Education is the key to innovation, and the technology jobs of tomorrow will require students with a strong background in math and science to compete in the 21st century global economy. 
You and some conservative Republicans originally refused to commit any of the estimated $9.4 billion in the Rainy Day Fund. At the urging of numerous members of both parties, you struck a deal to use $3.2 billion of the Fund to close the current deficit; which will keep the state running and help the State avoid a shortfall for six weeks over the summer.  This expenditure, however, will do little to help public schools for the next two years, leaving them $7 billion short.
You have stated that you would reject a bill that spends one additional cent of the Rainy Day Fund for the next two years.  Moreover, you have said that school districts should spend down their reserve balances, which they are required by law to maintain, creating fiscal insecurity and devaluing financial accountability ratings.  I believe it is disingenuous for the state to require school districts to hold a specific amount of money in their reserves, only to later tell those same districts to spend it down so that the state does not have to take responsibility for its mistakes.
Governor Perry, we need real solutions to our budget problems.  The definition of insanity is to repeat the same thing over and over again while expecting to yield different results.  Anyone can apply across the board budget cuts without thought.  However, the voters elected us to lead, to set priorities, and to protect those priorities.  The right priorities include responsible spending cuts, closing corporate tax loopholes and using some of the Rainy Day Fund.
I am incredibly concerned about what the draconian cuts to public education will mean for preparing our children and protecting their future.  We cannot afford to balance our budget on the backs of our children, and more importantly I believe that we should put party politics aside and do what’s in the best interest of our state.

OPENING UP THE PROVERBIAL CAN O' WORMS (or alternatively, the longest blog post EVER)

I wrote an entry and put it up on my blog last Friday, not thinking too much about it.  I mean, this is a blog, after all, supposedly to write about what is going on in my life, and this was definitely going on.  I was swimming in it. 

But then a dear friend emailed me, worried, like "I read your blog.  Are you okay?"  Okay, she didn't actually italicize 'okay', but I could hear it in the way her words looked.  So I went back and read over my post, and yeah, it did sound a little over the top.  A bit Joyce meets Camus.  But here's the thing: I HAVE MY MASTER'S IN THEATER.  SOMETIMES I HAVE A TENDENCY TO BE DRAMATIC.  TO MAKE TOO BIG A DEAL OUT OF STUFF.  TO FREAK OUT EVEN MY THERAPIST WITH A UNIQUE ABILITY TO RADIATE NEGATIVITY.

The fortunate flip side to this special quirk in my personality is that once I get it out (the verbal vomit, if you will) I'm generally better for it.  I realize the older I am (FORTY, there I said it, it rolled off my tongue like buttah-40!) how often I refuse to let things out because I'm worried what people will think of me.  But the more I take ownership for who I am, what I actually think/feel, the better things usually are.

However, this particular blog post was complicated, because I mentioned my sweet baby, which I haven't done here so far, except in glowing terms.  The blog so far has focused on the DISD education crisis--both coverage of events and my personal slant in the crossfire.  My family has been on the sidelines as part of the impetus for my taking part in a stand against politicians and supposed school advocates who don't have a problem axing $10 billion from the education budget.  (As a side issue, I hope my newfound activism will one day lead me to the critical position of close enough to ruffle Rick Perry's hair.)

On the other hand, the subtitle of my blog is, "travails from motherhood, writersville, and accidental activism".  I didn't just want to write about education.  I am also a mother, a writer, a human being (in no particular order): I wanted this blog to capture all of those roles, beginning with the real-life impact these education budget cuts might have. So that particular Friday post happened to be of the motherhood variety.  But after reading my friend's concerned email, I worried other pals and random strangers might be questioning my sanity.  Seeking objectivity, I showed my husband, my rock, anticipating that bit of emotional support spouses rely on. He REALLY didn't like it.  
       "That's about our family.  You're going to write about our daughter's possible health issue?  Why do you need to tell everyone that?"
       To which I said, "How is this different than narrative non-fiction, a personal essay, or a memoir?  David Sedaris? Running with Scissors?"  To which he had no good answer. 

But I knew what he meant.  What separates a blog from a journal entry?  While journal entries can be cathartic to write, why did mine need to go public? My husband is smart, fiercely private, protective of his family.  Which I adore about him.  He had this rarely worn wrinkle-browed expression, the guy who trusts me to do what I want pretty much always. "Words are powerful," he said, like he needed to remind me.

So I read the post once more and this time, I felt naked, literally.  Like anyone who hopped online could see me with less than a string bikini.  Absolutely no sunblock.  My soul exposed.  My heart open.  Just lying there for anyone to misread, misjudge, make fun of.  In other words, it was exactly like middle school.  Worse (what could be worse than MIDDLE SCHOOL?), I was the one who put it there.  What if I had jinxed my baby by letting worst case scenario fears float into the atmosphere?   You've read The Secret, people. It was an Oprah Book Club selection!  Magical thinking abounded. 

So I emailed a lovely writer friend and asked her opinion--too much, too personal?  She wrote back, "Blogging is tricky."  Her point was, who is your audience?  What is your purpose?  Then I felt a little sweaty, unsure of answers to these most basic questions. I hadn't really thought that through.  Bravely, I fled back to Blogger and deleted the entry. Just took a second to erase it completely.  Heartened, I wiped it clean from Face Book, from GoogleBuzz.  Not a trace of my neurotic bender. 

But I've spent the last few days going back and forth.  Just getting rid of it seems like cheating.  As Meg Ryan says in When Harry Met Sally, it's already out there.  Pretending I didn't post it seems a little ridiculous.  So am I a mommy blogger or a political blogger and who do I mean to talk to? Is my blogging purpose to tell a story, elicit a response, bring about change?  All of these and/or more?  If it is about education, writing, and motherhood all at once, does that dilute the power?  While writing about myself is one thing, is it fair write about those I hold most dear, to tell  how life with them appears through my lens, but without their permission?

People have asked this question about writing before: Aren't you worried [insert family member] is going to read it?  I usually say some version of: You can't think about it.  If you do, you won't write it.  Or worse, you will write it, with the end and audience in mind, and what you create will change entirely. Would Philip Roth or Joyce Carol Oates be so prolific if they cared what their parents thought??

I don't know the answers to these questions.  In part, this blog is meant to stumble into, over, and through to get to the best approximations.  Because life is messy.  One thing is certain, though: were I to do only things I felt sure about, I would do far less far more of the time.  So.

I am a writer.  It took me a long time to figure that out, and yes, it would be nice if the pay weren't so erratic, but it is what it is, and I am what I am, to reference Popeye.  I write in large part to connect with people, to convene amidst questions, insights, problems, and hilarities surrounding what it means to be human.  Posing the questions aloud, on paper, to someone, is my attempt to work it out.

While the inquiry began with education, turns out it doesn't end there; it was getting the conversation started. 

Which is why I ask for you to follow the blog and comment, dear readers!! I want to know who I am speaking to.  You as reader are part of the conversation.

Because ultimately that is the only way to keep the dialogue moving forward.  I think that is where change begins.

So does that mean I can write about my husband, son, stepson, and daughter carte blanche? I honestly don't know. For now, it will have to be its own work in progress.  This is no exact science. But today I think it's okay to use this blog consciously, responsibly, as a means to consider the question(s).  (And in case of emergency, there's always delete, right?)

Finally, in a fancy new blogging twist, I ask my sweet husband, LIVE, as he reads this (because I am MAKING HIM READ THIS BEFORE I POST IT, get it?):  Hi, honey!  Is it alright with you for me to re-post my post that was then wasn't?  Because that feels a little scary, a bit naked, to re-post, but it also feels authentic.

And so now I have to add choice C. addendum:  I agree with everything he says; my daughter is indeed a beautiful hilarious little ham and I adore her.  But I'm also a worrier.  It comes with the territory.

Breakdown 101: pitfalls to trying to be the change you want to see in the world

Do you ever get the feeling you should stay huddled asleep under that ridiculously comfy comforter and refuse to get up?  That it might even be better that way for all involved?  Because no matter your noble intentions, the universe appears to be guffawing while poking you in the eye?  I've been wondering about apathy surrounding me, but you know, it makes sense actually: if you don't put yourself out there, you do not have to feel the way I do today. And that's not nothing. Because something you did with the best of intentions turned on its face, and today, you are not the hero, but the idiot, the goober, the fool, the loser, the insert whatever derogatory noun-ish insult you prefer.  And you--okay enough of this extraneous namby-pamby second person usage--because I, I, feel so ANGRY.  Because I am trying to do the right thing, even if it did accidentally make me look like a pinhead. 

I peer now through this crap-colored lens at this blog, my latest effort, at least in part, to address the train wreck that is public education.  I swallow my modest stats, my heartfelt words, my naive idiocy, and I wonder, really, why bother?  I love you, I salute you, my five noble followers, but do you know how many bloggers are out there, how many are computer literate?  They have created their own blog rolls, enticed readers to their site with fancy buttons and stuff, in um, direct opposition to my skill set.  In the long hours I've clocked over the last few months delving into public education solutions, today I think, have my efforts really done squat to remotely change the landscape? 

Meanwhile, hey, I've missed a bunch of Oprahs, People magazines, TMZ updates. You know, I could have been anesthetizing, eating processed foodstuff and buying Suzanne Somers workout videos on late night TV. Or I could have even fashioned my own herb garden to make fabulous homemade pizza if I wanted to stay positive about it (and my son asked me to).  My point is, it's not like there aren't other things going on.  In fact, my sweet daughter, freshly one, who babbles like Pebbles, happens to not be meeting her milestones.  No, she is not crawling, she is not pointing, not saying 'dada', not pulling up, thanks for asking.  She's not baby Einstein, which admit it or no, we parents all secretly hope for: on the playground comparing our progeny to other, similarly-aged children, we add data covertly to our internal spreadsheet, 'what can mine do that hers can't?'. We are relieved when our kid can grab the monkey bars and make it halfway across, when they catch our eye and wave.  Only my sweet pixie does not wave yet.  When I say her name, sometimes she looks at me and sometimes she doesn't. 

It could be nothing.  Just different timetables.  We're all individuals, you know--'free to be you and me'--could be she needs a bit more time and encouragement.  Everything will be, is, fine.  She'll catch up.

Or it could be something.  Google tells me so.  It's enough of a concern that my pediatrician recommended I contact Early Childhood Intervention and a Developmental Pediatrician yesterday at Isabel's one-year checkup. So I scour the Internet, cursing my stupid stubborn fingers.  All these things we take for granted--that our children will walk, speak, grow--you know, because that couldn't happen to me, right?  But then me has to be somebody; who's to say me isn't me??   I spent an absurd amount of tear-stained time last night on the computer, husband's sidelong glances speaking volumes when he entered or exited the bedroom without uttering a word.  Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, gross motor delay, myeleniation?  I'm certain I spelled that word wrong. BabyCenter.com even notes the weird idiosincracy I thought was just an endearing Isabel-ism--legs crossed at the ankles, held stiff and straight in the air, small hands clasped tightly at her chest--but turns out lots of mothers worry about it.  There's a whole page on it.  Is it a sign of something?  Last night, dreams teemed with wheelchairs and milestone charts and Special Olympics and mommy and me classes and rays of hope and shame outshined by terror.

Then I woke up.  I got the kids ready for school, I made breakfast, I didn't eat.  And then I found out that even though I had tried to do something positive and proactive for education, I accidentally messed up, well, part of it, anyway.  (I know, I know, in the off chance you are actually reading this, you want to know what it was already that I did wrong.  But I don't want to further vex the party disappointed with me by getting all McCarthy over it, and the particulars aren't what matter.)

Now I must get my son from school.  After an anxious morning filled with too many books and sing-song tactile motherly engagement, naming every object we see--"Red cup!  Do you see the yellow duck?"--my Pebbles wanna-be is now passed out from exhaustion.  I have not done the dishes we have a mountain of laundry I have not showered.  And here's the thing.  I'm typing this most likely meaningless stupid woe is me blog entry. Even though I'm renouncing my hyper fingers, beseeching them in vain, 'what are you typing for?' Still they keep moving, trying to make something out of nothing. Because I've got to do something. To keep going, I guess.

She's Still Squeaking! Yeah, yeah, yeah! (in the tune of Elton John, peope, c'mon

Don't worry, I was just trapped under something heavy.  My bad little attitude.  But now I'm back.  Whew.  I can hardly believe how relieved you are. Okay.  Couple of quick things for you:
Michael McNaughton, who runs the website Dallas Friends of Public Education (dfpe.org) is also one of the members of the School Board’s Citizens Budget Review Commission (he was appointed by trustee Bruce Parrott).  He just started a website/blog about the work of the commission.  Check it out here, where you can read notes from each meeting (he just posted about the last one), and where he will be posting podcasts of the meetings as well.  While the Review Commission unfortunately does not get a final "vote" (the opposite, one might note, of American Idol), they are part of the discussion.  They meet on Mondays, so if you have suggestions you want brought straight to the board, here's a great way to do it.

You may be curious who took part in the second round of buyouts.  DMN has published the list of contract employees who took the DISD offer. Download it and you can search by your school.
Finally, a Million Teacher March being called SEE RED: HEAR ME  (the red in support of teachers) is brewing.  The idea is to wear red, get in groups, go to a coffee shop, a local park, a bookstore, wherever, and preferably have a sign that says "Ask Me About Public Education".(And I think that should be in all red, too, don't you??  Let's work with the theme, people!) The idea is to get people asking questions, encouraging them to write their legislators, etc.  Check out the FB page and try to get together a group if you can!!  I am trying to get together a group in East Dallas, so please let me know in the comments section if you would like to be a part.

What can we do?? You asked for it!:)

At Dallas.org, someone blogged: "Idiot here!  "So what can we do? Suggestions?"

Here is my response:

Dear Idiot (from a former idiot!),

Once your children are involved in this mess, you start getting to work:)) So here is what you can do:

At the last DISD board meeting, Trustee Lew Blackburn noted that he and Dr. Hinojosa had been down in Austin the previous morning, and that the legislature did not look as if they were in any hurry to remedy this situation (something to the effect of, they felt our pain, but they weren't going to do anything to make it go away).

Mr. Blackburn suggested that the thing we can do NOW that is most important is to CALL/EMAIL/MAIL GOVERNOR RICK PERRY and LT. GOVERNOR DAVID DEWHURST. One woman from the community who spoke suggested we call EVERY DAY. I love this idea. If at least half of us called one or the other of these two men for the next week everyday starting Monday, I think it would have a tremendous impact. Our POWER IS IN OUR NUMBERS. How long will it take you to make a call once a day for a week? Is that worth the education of our kids?

Remember when you call what specifically we are asking for from the legislature:
**Use the Rainy Day Fund
**Put off the new STARR achievment test until this crisis has passed
**Find other areas to cut before education
**Sign the paperwork necessary to receive the $830M in federal money waiting for us
and most important of all:

**ADDRESS THE STRUCTURAL DEFICIT!!! Until the tax reforms of 2006 are changed, Texas education will continue to be in jeopardy, not just for this biennium, but in perpetuity: if more money is going out than is coming in (the basic definition of structural deficit), these tax laws must change in order for the problem to be eradicated. We are in the current situation not because of the recession (although that certainly doesn't help matters), but because we are, as a state, continuing to use an outdated unworkable tax model.

Town Hall Meeting this Saturday @ 1 with Representative Kenneth Sheets

How sad!  You have absolutely nothing to do this Saturday? Truly, that is tear-provoking.  Alas, the perfect IDEA: gather at the Town Hall Meeting with Representative Kenneth Sheets at 1 PM to remind him how many of us are out here encouraging him to DO THE RIGHT THING wth regard to education.

Our houses won't be worth squat if everyone goes screaming North, am I right?  Exactly.  So even though it's difficult, and I'm sure there is some kind of sport going on somewhere, exercizing your civic duty feels super-tingly and special.  Try it!!

DISD DISTICT 3 MEETING, March 31st

Okay, don't get mad, but I have to say it: I just got off the phone with our District 3 school board representative, Bruce Parrott.  I called to thank him for organizing the meeting led at Bryan Adams High School Thursday night.  I also apologized to him, because out of the entire Bryan Adams school auditorium, maybe a fourth of it was filled.  I don't want to be a nudge, but wow, was that turnout pathetic.  I am not saying I am not guilty of this all the time.  I completely get it.  We are all busy and have practices and dinner and husbands who work late, and of course we all have kids--that's why we are here in the first place.  But that sparsely filled auditorium was sobering. 

In large part due to the fact that Superintendent Michael Hinojosa was ACTUALLY THERE(!), ready to answer questions for as long as we had them.  From what I hear, he has not been to the other District meetings thus far.  Apparently,  Mr. Parrott made it clear how important his presence was, and props to Hinojosa for showing up. I wish Mr Parrott had let everyone know that Hinojosa was going to be there--frankly, I would have shown up with better questions and I definitely think more people would have made it--but either way, we missed a golden opportunity, not only to get questions answered, but to show that we, the East Dallas community, are united and involved. 

So today I am confused, not sure what to do to make people realize that we really do have power to change how things happen if we create a lot of noise involving lots of people across the school population.  We can't complain about what we are being handed and then not show up when the conversation is started.  I know in my heart we all want the best for our kids.  That's not in question.  I just believe that if he had seen an auditorium spilling over with concerned fired-up parents, it would have meant something.  Or am I overreacting?  Seriously want your opinion.  Or is there something better I can do to get people involved again???
